I've been watching quite a bit of fresh anime for a while now ("fresh" meaning fansubs of new shows, posted anywhere from three or four days to within 24 hours of when the show aired in Japan), and I've noticed a certain clumping effect. Some TV seasons (in Japan these are fairly rigorously four per year, around 13 weeks long) there may be only a few shows that are any good (the current season, for example), but sometimes a buttload of not just good but excellent shows come along. Last spring was an example: the second season of Durarara!!, House of Five Leaves, Giant Killing, Angel Beats, Arakawa Under the Bridge, K-On!! (second season), Kaichou wa Maid-sama!, Working!!, Tatami Galaxy, Senkou no Night Raid, and more. Not all of those were excellent by any means, but they were all enjoyable.

A year later, a new anime season looms. And I mean looms; the Random Curiosity blog lists forty-two (42) new TV shows in their Spring 2011 preview.

These are the ones I will at least check out:

Follows directly on Wolverine, which maybe I should go back and watch after all. Iron Man wasn't that great, but I'll give this weird Marvel-does-anime thing another shot.

Tiger & Bunny

The OVA was great.

Yondemasu yo, Azazel-san. (He's Calling For You Azazel)

Hen Zemi

The OVA was great.

Hanasaku Iroha

Showa Monogatari

Ore-Tachi ni Tsubasa wa Nai

Yet another dating sim adaptation, but might be OK.

Fireball Charming

sequel to Fireball which I haven't watched yet.

Steins;Gate [sic]

30-Sai no Hoken Taiiku

Sex ed for 30-year-old virgins. Heh. Oh Japan, you're so messed up.

Sket Dance

Hyouge Mono

Hidan no Aria

At first annoyed that this has nothing to do with the Aria, I'm a little intrigued.

Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko

Dororon Enma-kun Meerama

Maria Holic Alive

Sequel to Maria-holic, which I haven't watched yet.

Sekai-ichi Hatsukoi

Because anyone with an open mind ought to watch at least one "boys love" show before he dies.

Ao no Exorcist

Lotte no Omocha!

Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai II

Season Two of the better-than-expected The World God Only Knows

Yuruani? [sic]

C: The Money of Soul and Possibility Control

From the writer of Baccano! and Durarara!!, so it's a must-see.

Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Boku-tachi wa Mada Shiranai.

Deadman Wonderland

Might be too gruesome for my tastes but I'll check it out.

Appleseed XIII

The 13 in the title is misleading; it's a fresh take on the original Appleseed manga.

Yeesh. Twenty-eight shows. That's not even including upcoming OVAs ("original video animation"). My poor little DSL connection is going to work its fingers to the bone.
