Woke up unprecedentedly rested at 4 AM this morning (well, unprecedented in recent memory); after catching up on mail and webcomics, went out for a walk and a cappuccino. I was struck by how clear the skies were; I tried to count the Pleiades but though at first I could make out maybe five, my efforts to focus better made things worse. But Orion was magnificent, and the nose of his dog blazed. I walked a few more feet and out from behind some trees, BAM, there was a brilliant Venus and a stunning sliver of a moon, all agleam with Earthlight.

So I hustled back home for the camera.

That was the best I could do with the Canon G9 and no tripod, just a convenient concrete pillar.

In other local entertainment, I was at my local the other day talking to a nice quiet geeky sort of girl when she got up and said "Welp -- gotta go drain the oyster."

Draining the oyster.

Words cannot convey how much I love this phrase.

Here's Venus and the Moon again about 20 minutes later, giving some scale:

It's possibly even more beautiful with the first glow of dawn in the sky.

Wow, indeed. See what you get when you wake up early?

A better effect is achieved by simply staying up through the best parts of the day.
